Assemble, install, and operate rigging gear (cables, ropes, pulleys, winches) to lift, lower, move, or position machinery, structural steel, and other heavy objects in various plant locations. Direct crane operations using hand signals, whistles, or radios.
 

Key Responsibilities:

• Receives work assignments, determines materials and tools, and proceeds to the worksite.

• Examine loads to estimate size, weight, and required rigging equipment.

• Calculate load-bearing capacity and prepare rigging sketches or blueprints.

• Attach lifting devices to hoisting equipment and secure loads using slings, clamps, hooks, bolts, or knots.

• Protect slings and ropes from sharp edges and potential damage.

• Guide loads into position safely; communicate with crane operators using hand signals or radios.

• Inspect chains, slings, ropes, cables, hooks, and lifting gear for defects (cracks, wear, corrosion) and report issues.

• Maintain alertness to hazards, obstructions, and safe load paths.

Qualifications:

• Secondary education (12 years) plus 2-year technical apprenticeship leading to recognized diploma.

• 8 years of rigging experience in gas, refinery, or petrochemical industry.

• Fluent in English (spoken and written).

Skills and Competencies

• Knowledge of rigging hazards and safety precautions.

• Physically fit with good vision and hearing; able to judge distances and work at heights.
